Shire shocked their neighbours and pre-season promotion favourites Stenhousemuir by giving them one of their biggest hidings in quite a while.

It was no surprise when the home side went in front after 16 minutes. Derek Ure chased a long ball into the opposing penalty area and squared to Marc McKenzie on the right touchline, and his accurate cross was headed in by Carl Thywissen.

Despite having most of the play, Shire couldn't add to their tally before the interval and had to settle for a 1-0 lead going into the second session.

The visitors should have equalised after 57 minutes when Ian Diack neatly touched the ball over Andy Brand's head which left him one-on-one with keeper Robert Tiropoulos, but he sent his finish wide of the post and it looked easier to score.

Stenhousemuir paid heavily for that miss as McKenzie helped himself to a hat-trick between the 58th and 70th minutes. His first goal came following a move between Paul Stewart and Paul Tweedie, and when William McCulloch failed to hold the latter's low shot McKenzie was left with the easiest of tasks to score.

Brand then released Tweedie, who held the ball just long enough to send McKenzie through a square backline to beat McCulloch from close range.

McKenzie's third goal was undoubtedly the pick of the bunch when he picked up a pass from Stewart about 30 yards from goal before sending a rocket into the corner with McCulloch clawing helplessly at thin air.

Tweedie completed the scoring in injury time after a mistake by centre half Mark Cowan.
