Elgin City moved closer to a play-off spot after their fourth victory in four games since Brian Irvine took over the managerial reins.

This should have been their toughest test so far, but although their opponents Stenhousemuir were league leaders the Warriors gave a lack-lustre display from the start of the game.

Elgin took the lead in the eighth minute through a Chris Gardiner tap-in after Stenhousemuir defender Robbie Henderson got himself into a tangle as Stuart Cumming attacked his flank before crossing for Gardiner.

The home side equalised with their first real attack when they went on the counter attack from an Elgin corner. The swift counter saw Iain Diack pick up the ball on the half-way line before striding forward and squaring the ball for Paul Murphy to hit home from six yards.

The game was poised fairly evenly for most of the game, but Elgin looked the more threatening and they took the lead in the 64th minute when a defensive mix-up between Michael Renwick and Willie McCulloch allowed the ball to fall at the feet of Martin Johnston, who made the most of his opportunity to put Elgin ahead once more.

As the game progressed, the home defence was stretched to breaking point and ex-Warrior Martin Lauchlan had two golden opportunities to put the game beyond doubt but was thwarted by McCulloch.

In stoppage time Diack should have scored the equaliser when he found himself one-on- one with Renton, and although it looked easier to score the body language was all wrong and Renton pulled of a comfortable save to secure all three points for Elgin and dent Stenhousemuir's promotion chances.
